Chapter 27 – Portia

“There is nothing more aggravating than when a loved one or a close friend looks into our heart and sees what we are struggling with more clearly than we see it for ourselves. We should thank them for the insight, but we are usually more inclined to pretend that we have no idea what they are talking about.”

The Centurion Guide to Practical Advice – Chapter 3: Proverb 5

Portia couldn’t stop obsessing about the woman in the armor. She could tell Brendan to let go of his fixation about the man who kidnapped his sister and almost killed him, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the woman who almost put a dagger through her eye. It made her feel like a hypocrite, but every time she tried to think about something else, it was only a matter of minutes before her mind wandered back. There was one crucial difference between her problem and Brendan’s, Den wasn’t an enemy anymore, but the woman in armor was.

She had fought enemies before, but there was something strangely personal about this one. That woman was going to be a problem, and Portia was going to have to find a way to deal with her.

“You seem distracted,” Brendan asked as they walked out of the dining hall after breakfast.

“Werewolves are running around the forest turning other people into werewolves, so, yes, I’ve got a lot on my mind right now. What about you? How are your plans coming?” Portia asked, pushing the conversation in a different direction.

“Your grandfather is quite the strategist. He took my idea and is now running circles around me with it. Remind me never to go to war against him.”

“I will, though civil wars are generally discouraged among Centurions.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. Right now, I’m going to talk to Reyna, do you want to come along?” Brendan asked.

“Actually, I would.”

Portia led the way to the makeshift holding cell in the keep. As a general rule, people who had committed a crime were not imprisoned in castles. They were fined, whipped, pressed into service, or executed, but not detained for more than a couple of days. High ranking prisoners who were being held for ransom were usually given a nice room and allowed to freely roam the keep, they were just not allowed to leave it. Having a dedicated prison cell was something new for Castle Nordhaven, but they had hastily converted an old storage room with stone walls to serve the purpose. The wooden door had been reinforced with iron strips, and a crude window had been cut into it, an iron ring had been set into the floor for restraint purposes.

“I’ve talked to Lord Paschal, he said we could talk to Reyna if she’s up to it,” Brendan told the guard stationed outside. The man peeked through the window to make sure that everything was under control and then opened the door. Brendan and Portia walked in.

Reyna was lying on the bed, looking exhausted. Dr. Zhen and Electra were with her.
